Spooning

July 20, 2018

SL\CE Editorial chief Paul Koblik hates when utensils are randomly abandoned around the space – this time he’d reached his limit and left this little lost spoon on an editor’s steno chair. That’ll learn him good.

Haunted Harvest

November 8, 2017

My Hallowe’en decoration from last week in front of our home. The scariest part was firing up that old 1952 Ford 8N tractor – there’s just no telling what that ancient bucket of bolts will do.

Test Fail

October 23, 2017

Boarding my aircraft at London Heathrow, scanning my boarding pass to get through the gate to the aircraft. Took like 10 seconds to do this (if you don’t think that’s a long time, try counting out 10 seconds with a line of hostile Group 2’s behind you) before the scanner let me through. Seems it was waiting for me to confirm that I was okay sitting in an exit row. Took 10 seconds to figure out the boarding pass scanner but I’m good to MacGyver the door in the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure and/or engines afire emergency with hundreds of lives at stake. Yeah. Sure. I’m good with that.

There’s My Lucky Penny!

September 26, 2017

I peeled off my mobile phone case while hanging out Saturday in the airline lounge. Must be like finally getting a cast taken off – boy, was it nasty in there. I’m replacing the old one with this one. Prolly not the least bit practical but boy does it look keen.

How Not to Treat Users at Your International Airport

September 11, 2017

I actually like flying in and out of SFO, but this stuff drives me bananas, not least because I feel for visitors from out-of-state, especially those for whom English is not their primary language. When you step out of Baggage Claim, you’ll find your shuttle at the blue and white painted curb. See it?

Of course not, and it’s ridiculous to think you can. That’s okay, just follow the signs helpfully printed in 8 point Helvetica…

… because of course SFO needs to make its signs all but unreadable at any distance longer than your arm. Oh, there it is.

See, all you have to do is push your nostrils into it:

Less Is More When It Comes To Graphs

August 28, 2017

Very fun animated GIF – I was a bit skeptical when it started but totally sold by its conclusion. Watch, learn, and make better graphs

ACTION ITEM: Make your graphs as clean and simple as possible – this goes for any PowerPoint slide as well – remove as much as you can, then toss out half of what’s left
